One of my favorite ways to get to know a place is by going for a run. It’s the perfect way to get a real lay of the land, and you might even meet some locals along the way. If you ever find yourself in Aspen and are looking for a great 3.5–4 mile run I would highly recommend the Rio Grande Trail; it’s gorgeous! All along the way there are stunning views of the Roaring Fork River, Ajax Mountain, and some beautiful Aspen homes.
If you’d like to give this trail a try, start anywhere along Main St. and follow it west until you reach 8th St. Follow 8th St. going north and jump onto the Meadows Trail. The Meadows Trail will follow along Castle Creek and will intersect with the Rio Grande Trail after a bridge that goes over the Roaring Fork River. Take a right onto the Rio Grande Trail and follow this until you reach the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies. From here you take a right onto Mill St. which will lead you right back into downtown Aspen.
This trail is great for running, walking, biking, dog walking, etc. Here’s a quick taste of the scenery that awaits you in Aspen:
