A quick flight into Reno and less than a 3 hour drive south brought us into beautiful Mammoth Lakes, California, home of Mammoth Mountain. After a fast check-in with the friendly front desk at Sierra Nevada Lodge on Old Mammoth Road, and a quick drop of the bags in the room, we were off to see the town. We made it out the door and down the walkway when we were told of the great Happy Hour at the adjoining restaurant Rafter’s. I’ve always found that bartenders and taxi/bus drivers have a good feel for the town. That was certainly true when we met Andy. We enjoyed some local Mammoth beer and a great overview of the town.
Next morning started out in the teens as we were getting ready for the slopes. After a few hours of skiing/riding, we were out to see the town and some great lodging. All went well on the tours, saw the beauty of Mammoth Lakes, made many turns on Mammoth Mountain’s slopes, met many locals and when the time came to depart, I knew it wasn’t going to be too long before I returned!!!
A trip to Mammoth isn’t complete without trying the Chicken & Rice soup (accompanied
by a Cadillac Marg w/Cointreau) at Roberto’s, apres-ski on the deck at Mammoth
Mountain Inn, tubing at Sledz and a look at the extensive wine list at Rafter’s
and their soon to be opened Red Lantern Chinese Restaurant.
