Pond Skimming Across the Nation

It’s a tradition in the east, west, and in-between. Once the days grow longer and the sun is out people are ready to shed their wintertime layers, put on their ski gear, and jump into freezing cold snow melt ponds. This activity is fondly known as pond skimming.

For those who have never witnessed a pond skimming event it is a must. Skiers and snowboarders alike dress in wild costumes, ski/ride off a jump and attempt to cross a 100-foot pond. Prizes are awarded to the best skim, best fall, best costume, etc…The overall vibe is the funkier the better.

East coasters can check out Killington’s Bud Light Intergalactic Pond Skimming Championships. The title of the event should be persuasive enough – it’s sponsored by Bud Light. To guarantee warm weather Killington, VT holds its pond skim in April. This year the “wacky rite of spring” will take place on April 14, 2012.

Westerners can also get in on the pond skimming action at Canyons Resort. Its pond skimming contest starts off their Spring Grüv, a springtime celebration, and is the most popular party of the year at Canyons Resort, UT. Like Killington, the goal is to be wild and wacky with outlandish costumes and this year you can enjoy a free concert by American rock band Little Feat. The events start at 12pm on March 24, 2012.
