No rivers are dyed, but the festivities are big this year in Crested Butte for Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17th, 2012! Barnaked Ladies, Guster and Big Head Todd and the Monsters are all headlining the weekend-long FestEvol; a winter sport and musical festival all about creating a sustainably “eco-village” for a weekend. For this festival, Evol Food brings their passion of food and sustainable lifestyles to the worlds of mountain towns across the country. Crested Butte is the first stop on the tour – coinciding with Saint Patrick’s weekend this year, Crested Butte is the place to be to wear green and drink some Guinness.
If you can’t make it to Crested Butte for Saint Patrick’s Day do not worry! Spring festivities do not stop there and March is jam packed with events unique to Crested Butte. The weekend following Saint Patrick’s is the Al Johnson Memorial Uphill/Downhill Telemark Ski Race. Don’t be fooled by the name. Named after the 19th century mailman who braved delivering mail to remote mining camps in Crested Butte, this race is 38 years old and fun outlandish costumes are a must. Participants help to raise money for a number of local charities.
Five days later on March 30th there is the grooviest dance party of the year in Gunnison Valley. Held at Butte 66 in Mt. Crested Butte, community radio station KBUT puts on its annual Soul Train party. To get your funk on wear some of your disco favorites and join the dance off to be crowned the King or Queen of Soul. Winners get to keep the title until next year’s dance.
To recap, Saint Patrick’s Day might be around the corner, but for Crested Butte this is just the beginning. The next few weeks of March are FULL of fun and unique events to Crested Butte:
March 17-18 FestEvol – The Barenaked Ladies, Guster, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, and the Pete Kilpatrick Band come to the Gunnison Valley for a weekend of music.
