It’s my 33rd birthday and I get to ride at Vail Resort today! I’ve spent the last two nights in Breckenridge and I’ll be spending the next two nights in Beaver Creek. Along the way is Vail Resort and I don’t want to miss my chance at riding at one of the largest ski resorts in the world.
After eating a delicious crepe and having some coffee at La Francaise, a French bakery in Breckenridge, we were on our way. We hoped for some great snow overnight, but the snow ended up hitting Denver instead of the actual ski resorts. We drove the 45 minutes from Breck to Vail and parked in an underground lot at Vail Village ($25 for the day). Next we grabbed our boards and walked about a quarter mile from the lot to the lift. We walked through Vail Village and couldn’t help but stop and take pictures of the quaint Swiss village. However, we couldn’t wait to get on the mountain so we hurried to catch the lift that takes you back towards the China Bowl (Check out China Bowl Footage) and Blue Sky Basin. My boyfriend, Dan, and I could not believe the size of this resort. We definitely needed more than a single day here.
At the end of the day I sat at Express Lift Coffee House at the base of Vista Bahn lift and watched skiers and snowboarders fall down the icy hill with poles flying and ski’s sliding. I wasn’t alone as families sat right along me cheering for their fellow skiers and snowboarders. No one was injured and it was all in good fun, and a great way to end the day.
I met up with one of our Destination Experts, Laurel Nelson, and she took me to her favorite Après-ski hangout called Vendetta’s. It was perfect for some end of day pizza and beer in a very local atmosphere. She bought me a Blue Moon for my birthday and we all cheered to a great day on the mountain.
Dan and I had to head to Beaver Creek and check in to our accommodations at Highlands Lodge. It only took us about 10 minutes to get from Vail to Beaver Creek. We checked in and quickly got ready for the evening. Dan had made reservations at a restaurant called Ludwigs located inside of Sonnenalp Hotel. The place was spectacular. The food was perfect and the sommelier was spot on with his wine parings.
We wanted to spend more time in Vail Village, but it had been a long day and a bottle of wine by the fire sounded much more pleasant. So we headed to my favorite liquor store in Colorado called, Beaver Liquors. The staff is great, and the selection of wine in their cellar is exceptional. After grabbing a few bottles of wine to hold us over for the weekend we headed to Highlands Lodge for a relaxing night by the fire. I’d say it was one of the best birthdays I’ve ever had.
